I Never Expected This Story to Become So Personal
It started with a single conversation.
Someone looked across the table at me and quietly said, "Our team uncovered something unique and important... you know it as the Ketores."
I didn't know what to think. The Ketores? Really? Could there be even the slightest possibility that this was true?
That question led me on one of the most remarkable journeys of my life. I traveled across Israel. I met archaeologists who spent decades searching for the Keilim of the Beis Hamikdash. I drove through a snowstorm in Wichita, Kansas to interview the scientist who examined the mysterious material. I spoke with people whose lives had been completely transformed by this discovery.
The deeper I went... the more incredible the story became.
One Man Refused to Give Up
For more than thirty years, Vendyl Jones searched the Judean Desert. Most people thought he was chasing a legend. He believed history had simply forgotten where to look.
His search led him back to one of archaeology's greatest mysteries: the Copper Scroll. Discovered near Qumran in 1952, it lists hidden treasures unlike anything found in the other Dead Sea Scrolls.
Could it preserve clues to the treasures of the Beis Hamikdash? That question consumed Vendyl Jones for decades, until something extraordinary happened.
The Discovery No One Expected
In 1992, members of Vendyl Jones' excavation team were walking across the desert. Suddenly, the ground collapsed beneath them.
They had discovered a previously unknown cave. Inside was a strange reddish material. Nobody knew exactly what it was, so it was sent for scientific testing.
What Did the Tests Reveal?
The material was examined by Rabbi Dr. Marvin Antelman, not only an accomplished chemist but also a respected talmid chacham. Few people were better qualified to analyze a discovery like this.
Using spectrometer analysis, he compared the material to the ingredients described by Chazal. The findings were remarkable: several ingredients associated with the Ketores appeared to be present, including Melach Sedomis and boris karsina.
One ingredient, however, remained absent: the mysterious Ma'aleh Ashan, known only to the Beis Avtinas.
A Conversation I'll Never Forget
One of the highlights of this journey brought me to Wichita, Kansas. A snowstorm couldn't stop me. I had to meet the scientist who personally tested the Ketores.
As we sat together, he described something that has stayed with me ever since: "There was an odor that came out of it that I had never experienced before. It's got a sweet component. It's an absolutely pleasing aroma."
Then his wife quietly added something I'll never forget.
It was the most amazing smell I've ever smelled.

Near the end of my journey, Jim Long reached into his bag. "This is for you." He handed me a small container.
I looked at it in disbelief. Could this really be the Ketores? After thousands of years, there was no fragrance left. But somehow, holding it affected me in a way I can't explain.
Later, I brought it to the Kosel. Within minutes, people began gathering. They wanted to see it. Hold it. Simply be close to it.
Watching their reactions, I realized something: this story isn't really about archaeology. It's about longing. It's about the Beis Hamikdash. It's about awakening something many of us didn't even realize we were missing.
Because no day reminds us more powerfully of what we've lost.
The Ketores wasn't simply incense. It represented the daily avodah of the Beis Hamikdash. Its fragrance filled the Heichal. Its service brought closeness between Klal Yisrael and Hashem.
